How to get a NIF

NIF stands for Número de Identificação Fiscal. It is a 9-digit tax number that is required when making big purchases (such as of a house or car), signing contracts such as a mobile phone contract or a property rental, doing business, receiving social security payments, and paying taxes. It is also the first step before applying for a NISS, which you will need to gain employment in Portugal, and a UTENTE, which you will need to access health services provided by the National Health Service. You may hear a NIF referred to as a Número de Contribuinte or just Contribuinte, for example in shops or the supermarket. You don’t need to provide a NIF when asked in a shop, but you may wish to so you can claim tax deductions on your personal income.
